My Writing Schedule

Over the last few months, I've had a lot of people ask me about my writing routine. Most of the people who ask this question are friends or family who are wondering where I find the time to write. But I've also received that same question from other writers, which gave me the idea of posting my writing schedule here on my blog. If you're a writer and you're reading this, I'd love to hear about your writing routine in the comments!

So here's how my schedule plays out over two weeks. Why two weeks? Because I have my son for 7 days, then his mother has him for 7 days. Those weeks work very differently, because when I have my son, time with him wins out over writing ever time.

On the weeks when I don't have my son...

  • Friday: 45 minutes of writing at lunch
  • Saturday: 60 to 120 minutes of writing during the day while my girlfriend naps
  • Sunday: 60 to 120 minutes of writing during the day while my girlfriend naps.
  • Monday: 45 minutes of writing at lunch, 3-4 hours of writing after work
  • Tuesday: 45 minutes of writing at lunch, 3-4 hours of writing after work
  • Wednesday: 45 minutes of writing at lunch
  • Thursday: 45 minutes of writing at lunch, 60-120 minutes of writing just before bed

On the weeks when I do have my son, my schedule is...boring. But hey, it works!

  • Friday: 60-90 minutes of writing (after my son is asleep)
  • Saturday: 60-90 minutes of writing (after my son is asleep)
  • Sunday: 60-90 minutes of writing (after my son is asleep)
  • Monday: 60-90 minutes of writing (after my son is asleep)
  • Tuesday: 60-90 minutes of writing (after my son is asleep)
  • Wednesday: 60-90 minutes of writing (after my son is asleep)
  • Thursday: 60-90 minutes of writing (after my son is asleep)

Obviously I can't stick to this schedule all the time. But if I have to modify the schedule because of random life events, I don't beat myself up over it. I just plan to return to the schedule the next day. This will be important later this month when I go to Italy for a couple of weeks. I have high hopes of writing every night when I return to my hotel room, but we'll see how that really works out for me!  :-)

Your turn. Let me know your schedule in the comments section below!
